SHOULDER PAIN CAUSED BY SLEEPING POSTURE

 

We spend one third of our life time sleeping rejuvenating our health and repairing our body system.

However, there are adversity of physical health if we have repetitive habitual sleeping position and as a result it accumulate stress, strain and eventually traumatized our musculoskeletal like, neck, shoulder and lower back.

More than 85% of my patients experienced neck and shoulder pain are related to their sleeping posture particularly sleeping laterally on side position.

Sleeping on the side position for more than 6 hrs generally accumulates tension, stress, strain and pain.  Over time it causes stiffness, spasm, myofascial pain syndrome(MPS) and impingement pain on the shoulder blade, rotator cuff and bicep tendon thus leads to frozen shoulder, bursitis and tendinitis.

Most common pain symptoms of sleeping side position are;

  1. Neck Stiffness typically affects the Sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM) which is one of the pillar that support our neck. Straining SCM can attribute to headaches, migraine and dizziness from time to time.  Neck stiffness can also cause tightness on the rhomboid muscle which make neck turning painful.

 

  1. With the full body weight compressing on one side of the shoulder blade, majority of them suffered from pinched nerve that leads to numbness tingling sensation on the arm, hand and fingers. Shoulder blade tightness sometime radiates pain on the chest.

 

  1. Side position sleeper commonly have rotator cuff injuries over time which basically caused inflammation on the shoulder soft tissues, AKA adhesive capsulitis. Such typical frozen shoulder signs and symptoms includes limited range of motion or movement, unable to flex your shoulder or putting on your T shirt, reaching your arm behind or lifting an object.  Particularly feeling stiffness pain in the morning and at time numbness on the arm.

 

  1. Bicep tendinitis or bursitis are very common complaints of pain which was the result of one side of the upper arm lying under the full body weight from sleeping side position. The prolonged weight bearing pressure and compression on the shoulder exacerbated the bicep tendon and bursa over time causes inflammation with excruciating pain during flexion and hyperextension.  

 

Shoulder pain can be easily treated without any surgery or invasive treatments like needle injections of corticosteroid or medications.  It is the underlying cause of such poor postures that needs to be addressed and corrected.
